Bydgoszcz Record Fair at Velvet. Music sounds different on physical media

Back when finding a good, unconventional record required more than simply typing its title into a search engine, record fairs were true windows onto the world. They were places where you could find releases unavailable in regular shops, discover music rarely mentioned in official catalogues, and come across niche yet outstanding artists. Above all, they offered the chance to talk to someone who knew more about music than a shop assistant—or sometimes even a music journalist.

The magic of physical media

Today, access to music is virtually unlimited. Millions of tracks are just one click away, while algorithms carefully suggest what they think we should listen to next. And yet record fairs have not disappeared. Their role has simply changed. From places where people primarily went to obtain music, they have become places where music can be searched for, touched, exchanged and discussed.

There is another important aspect as well: anyone who collects records, even casually, knows that listening to music on a physical format is a completely different experience. It is not only about the sound. Unwrapping a new record, looking at the cover, placing the disc on a turntable for the first time—these are things no streaming platform can offer.

Once a window onto the World, today a meeting place

On 17 October, another gathering organised by the Bydgoszcz Record Fair will take place at Velvet café in Bydgoszcz. The tables will be filled with vinyl records, cassettes, CDs, as well as other formats and musical rarities. Visitors will be able to expand their collections, search for a specific release, or simply leave things to chance—because one of the greatest pleasures of collecting is finding something you never planned to buy.

The Bydgoszcz Record Fair continues the tradition of earlier events held, among other places, at Mózg club, Kuźnia and the Municipal Library. Today, record fairs are often organised in large shopping centres, but this gathering in the intimate setting of Velvet café at 25 Gdańska Street will offer something different—a more communal experience. Because even though all the music in the world is now within easy reach, sometimes it still takes another person to help us truly discover something.
