Lutto Lento. An cclectic Sonic Adventure

Lutto Lento is the alias of Lubomir Grzelak – a sound artist, composer, music producer and DJ who has consistently operated beyond genre boundaries for years. His music can be club-oriented and experimental, rhythmic and unsettling, familiar one moment and completely alien the next. Rather than choosing a single direction, Grzelak explores what happens at the intersection of seemingly incompatible elements.

A Sonic Collage

His music brings together electronics, dub, ambient, industrial textures, folk, samples, unconventional instruments and voices. From the very beginning, an interest in the physicality of sound has also played an important role in his work. For years, Grzelak ran the cassette label Sangoplasmo, while his own productions grew, among other things, out of working with tape, synthesizers and sampling.

The artist himself describes his creative process as an experiment: in the studio, he tests what happens when elements that seemingly should not fit together are combined. These collisions give rise to tracks that resist easy genre classification, while at the same time following their own distinct and coherent logic.

From the Club to Storytelling

Lutto Lento’s work is not limited to club music. He also composes for theatre, film and performance art. Among other projects, he created the music for Michał Marczak’s film All These Sleepless Nights, and his experience of building tension and narrative also finds its way into his solo recordings.

A good example is the album Legendo, conceived as a kind of sonic fantasy in which a 19th-century Polish lullaby meets inspirations drawn from the paintings of Stanisław Wyspiański, alongside koto, dub basslines and elements of experimental music. Critics have described the album as a labyrinth filled with surreal imagery – one that rewards repeated listening, revealing something new each time.

Music That Is Hard to Predict

A similar approach can be heard on the 2025 EP 2568. Oboe, synthesizers, harp, a children’s choir, saxophone and rhythms positioned somewhere on the fringes of club music come together to form an eclectic yet coherent sonic narrative. A reviewer for HHV Mag described Grzelak as a precise researcher and storyteller of sound. The phrase perfectly captures Lutto Lento’s music: unpredictable, yet never accidental. Born out of an experimenter’s curiosity, but meticulously constructed.
