Hüma Utku – From Intimacy to Experimentation

Delicate melodies and abrasive electronics, unease and solace, modern textures and the sounds of traditional instruments — Hüma Utku constantly explores dualities and pushes the boundaries of sound, working at the intersection of experimental music, psychology, and visual arts.

Sonic Journeys Between the Inner and Outer Worlds
Originally from Istanbul and now based in Berlin, Hüma Utku creates conceptual albums that evoke vivid, almost cinematic landscapes, blending raw sonic textures, analog synthesizers, field recordings, and ritualistic rhythmic structures.

She debuted in 2018 with the EP Şeb-i Yelda, but it was her 2019 album Gnosis that brought her international recognition — the record marked her first clear fusion of experimental electronics with deep, conceptual storytelling. Her follow-up, The Psychologist (2022), was hailed by critics as “her most ambitious and authentic work,” showcasing her rare ability to intertwine psychological insight (grounded in formal education) with compositional craft.

A Voyage into Uncharted Territories
On her latest album, Dracones (April 2025), Hüma Utku draws inspiration from personal experiences and everyday observations. She reflects on transformation, intimacy, and family narratives — without pathos, yet with perceptible sincerity and emotional depth. The title references the medieval Latin phrase Hic sunt dracones (“Here be dragons”), once used on maps to mark unknown, potentially dangerous lands. For the artist, this uncharted territory is the experience of motherhood — with some tracks incorporating the pulsing sounds of ultrasound recordings, giving the music a unique, deeply personal dimension.

Sound as a Record of Experience
Since 2025, she has been running her own label and artistic platform, Mercurial Cycles. She has performed at festivals including Dark Mofo, Atonal Berlin, CTM Festival, and Sonic Acts. Her live shows appeal both to fans of experimental electronics and to those seeking strong emotions and narrative depth in music. This is a sonic journey through personal histories, where music becomes a tool for introspection and emotional catharsis — an offering for those who seek not only sound, but thought in art.
