Her experiments with voice and form created an entirely new artistic language that has inspired generations of creators – among those appearing in Shebar’s documentary are Björk and David Byrne. Philip Glass remarks that Monk proved to be “the most uniquely gifted among us,” though her groundbreaking work was initially met with misunderstanding and rejection. Monk in Pieces not only presents the artist’s extraordinary body of work but also her remarkable strength and perseverance in the face of harsh criticism – as a woman navigating the male-dominated New York art scene of the 1960s and 70s.

For years, Meredith Monk has been exploring how the human voice can become an instrument capable of expressing what words cannot.
