“Monk in Pieces” – a Cinematic Mosaic about a Legend of Contemporary Art
Billy Shebar’s film is a moving portrait of Meredith Monk – one of the most influential artists in contemporary culture. The world premiere of the documentary Monk in Pieces took place at the 2025 Berlinale in the Panorama section.
An artist who changed the language of music
For six decades, Meredith Monk has been redefining the boundaries of music and performance art. Her experiments with voice and form created an entirely new artistic language that has inspired generations of creators – among those appearing in Shebar’s documentary are Björk and David Byrne. Philip Glass remarks that Monk proved to be “the most uniquely gifted among us,” though her groundbreaking work was initially met with misunderstanding and rejection. Monk in Pieces not only presents the artist’s extraordinary body of work but also her remarkable strength and perseverance in the face of harsh criticism – as a woman navigating the male-dominated New York art scene of the 1960s and 70s.
A film like music
For years, Meredith Monk has been exploring how the human voice can become an instrument capable of expressing what words cannot. Her work, spanning music, theater, and movement, creates a space where sound turns into image and the body becomes a score. Billy Shebar’s film captures this singular sensitivity, translating the rhythm and structure of Monk’s works into a cinematic mosaic in which each “window” opens a new perspective. The camera follows the artist in her daily life and in the process of creating her latest piece, Indra’s Net, while archival footage offers a glimpse back at six decades of her artistry.

A question about the future
The most moving moments of the documentary are those in which the artist confronts the passage of time. For the first time, Meredith Monk entrusts her monumental work ATLAS to other creators. It is a gesture of trust, but also a question: what will become of her art when she is no longer here? Monk in Pieces is not a traditional documentary; it is a story about the power of imagination, about constantly pushing boundaries, and about a legacy that remains vibrantly alive.
