Artist talk on the concept of real-time cinema and its relationship with music, space, and analog manipulations, reflecting on the notion of visual music and the creation of live cinema. A reflection on the importance of creating images in collaboration with musicians and the creative possibilities this offers. Drawing from examples of collaborations carried out over the years with various musicians and festivals, this artist talk aims to explore the concept of visual music and its different developments.
PEDRO MAIA – Vila do Conde (Portugal). Based in Berlin. A Portuguese filmmaker working predominantly with 16mm and 8mm film, pushing the boundaries between analog, digital, and live cinema. By manipulating raw materials, he extends the limits and aesthetics of the analog medium, challenging traditional processes and continually expanding the visual and technological heritage of classic film methods. His work has been presented and exhibited at renowned film festivals, institutions, and galleries, including The Barbican Centre, Serralves Museum, The Centre Pompidou, Tokyo Contemporary Art Museum, Armenian Centre for Contemporary Experimental Art, MACBA Barcelona, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Mostra São Paulo, Curtas Vila do Conde, Indie Lisboa, among others. Maia has contributed to projects with Patti Smith, Soundwalk Collective, Danny Elfman, and Lucrecia Dalt. He has presented solo performances as well as collaborations with musicians such as Vessel, Shackleton, Holy Other, Visionist, Kevin Richard Martin, Shapednoise, Jacaszek, Shxcxchcxsh, Tropic of Cancer, Craig Leon, Lee Ranaldo, Raul Refree, Fennesz, Nisennenmondai, and many others. These works have been showcased worldwide at leading festivals like Sonar, Unsound, Berlin Atonal, Ars Electronica, All Tomorrow’s Parties, Mutek, TaicoClub Japan, and Red Bull Music Academy, as well as at renowned venues such as CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Eye Film Museum, Contemporary Cultural Center of Valencia, and CaixaForum Barcelona
