Piano Accident – a brilliant satire on social media
Piano Accident (L’accident de piano, France 2025) is the new film by Quentin Dupieux – one of the leading surrealists of European cinema, who has long been exploring the absurd and grotesque facets of modern life. His filmography includes Rubber – a mockumentary about a murderous rubber tire with paranormal abilities.
Influencing on the edge of self-destruction
The protagonist of Piano Accident is Magalie, also known as Magaloche, played by Adèle Exarchopoulos. A neurotic influencer and internet star, she has built her career on controversial livestreams featuring more or less spectacular acts of self-harm. After an “unfortunate accident” with a piano during the recording of yet another stream, she retreats into the shadows, isolating herself in an Alpine villa. She is accompanied by Patrick Balandras (played by Jérôme Commandeur), her personal assistant – though the term “all-purpose servant” would be more accurate. But Magalie will find no peace and quiet – she soon becomes the target of journalistic blackmail.
A dark comedy about the world of social media
Piano Accident is a black comedy (at times, very black indeed). It is a biting, merciless satire aimed at social media and the celebrities it creates – but also at the mindless audiences who fuel them. The film brims with absurd, grotesque, and razor-sharp observations on contemporary life, show business, and the relentless pressure of self-presentation. Critics emphasize that its social message is both funny and bitter, and that Piano Accident is Quentin Dupieux’s most captivating (and also most accessible) work to date. Cinema that provokes with its form and tone, yet never loses sight of reflection on modern life – a grotesque that manages to be both hilarious and disturbingly accurate.
A master of cinematic surrealism
Who is Quentin Dupieux? This director, musician, and screenwriter was born in Paris in 1974. As a teenager, he began making short films while simultaneously creating electronic music under the pseudonym Mr. Oizo. He released his first album in 1996. In 2007, he wrote and directed his feature debut, Steak. Subsequent films – including Rubber (2010), Reality (2014), and Deerskin – earned him not only international recognition but also the reputation of being one of the most original voices and a leading surrealist of contemporary cinema.
